Description

A weary traveler, fleeing the grip of a relentless drinking habit, stumbles upon the weather‑worn Black Lion Inn. The quiet, remote tavern offers the promise of solitude and a chance to let the haze of past excess fade. Inside, the narrator discovers a place that feels both refuge and reminder of a life gone slightly askew.

There, he encounters the Jolly Doctor, a robust, charismatic bachelor whose presence is as comforting as it is commanding. The doctor quickly tends to the narrator’s battered state, pulling him back onto his feet and offering a steady, observant friendship. Their evenings together by the fire turn into candid conversations about the stubborn pull of alcohol and the narrow window for change.

Through this early encounter, the story sets a tone of personal struggle and the hope of redemption, inviting listeners to follow a journey that balances humor, hardship, and the quiet resolve to confront one’s own demons.
