THE STAIRCASE AT THE HEARTS DELIGHT.
By Anna Katharine Green (Mrs. Charles Rohlfs)
In the spring of 1840 New York is rocked by a string of unnerving drownings. Well‑known merchants and millionaires surface lifeless in the East River, each clutching money, jewelry, and meticulously written papers that confirm their identities. The police, led by a young, ambitious officer named Gryff, suspect more than suicide, yet no obvious connection links the victims. As the city buzzes with speculation, Gryff keeps the cases close to his mind, hoping a hidden pattern will emerge.
Meanwhile, a destitute heir wanders into a shadowy pawnshop on the Bowery, desperate for cash. The proprietor, a cold‑hearted man with a glittering promise of instant wealth, hints at a secret “appointment” that could turn the youngster’s fortunes in a month—if he dares to follow. The encounter leaves a lingering sense of menace, and Gryff soon finds himself drawn into a tangled web of greed, coercion, and an unseen hand guiding the drownings. Listeners are invited to join the investigation as the early clues begin to surface.

A pioneer of American detective fiction, she helped shape the mystery novel with intricate plots and a sharp sense of legal detail. Her stories arrived decades before the golden age of crime fiction and still feel like the groundwork for it.
