Description

Ramsay Cartou has just stepped off the bustling streets of Chicago onto the deck of the lumber‑laden steamer H. H. Holter, where the raw scent of hides and the roar of Lake Michigan’s waves collide. The lake looms like a living beast—its rolling whitecaps both terrifying and magnetic—sparking in him a restless fascination that hints at a deeper yearning for adventure. As the ship’s crew wrestles with broken equipment and simmering tempers, Ramsay’s sharp eyes and quick reflexes mark him as a newcomer eager to prove himself.

When a hulking deckhand threatens a showdown, the tension on the deck crackles, but a gruff captain steps in, offering a glimpse of the hard‑won camaraderie that binds these men. Beneath the clamor of loading hides, rumors of a legendary white sturgeon surface, promising a test of courage and skill far beyond the ordinary labor of river trade. Ramsay finds himself pulled toward the lake’s mysterious depths, where the promise of the great fish may become his ultimate rite of passage.
