HOW LEN FOOLED THE PROFESSOR.
The story unfolds in a struggling mining settlement on the northern slope of Sierra San Juan, where prospectors have already abandoned several tunnels. Two young men, Max and Len, inherit a neglected shaft they name the “Last Chance,” and face the despair of a community on the brink of collapse. Their resolve is tested as they contemplate abandoning the dream altogether.
Into this precarious situation steps Sandy McKinnon, a practical newcomer with a letter of introduction, and the seasoned Scotsman Alexander McKinnon, who together agree to join the venture on generous terms. Armed with fresh supplies and a tentative partnership, they set out to revive the mine before winter freezes the canyon. The early chapters blend rugged frontier life, cautious optimism, and the subtle threats posed by rivals, promising an engaging tale of perseverance and the thin line between hope and ruin.
