[Frontispiece: Surely the rider was just what the owner of the voice, half laughing, half crooning, tenderly lilting, must be.]

In a bright spring valley framed by towering pines and distant snow‑capped peaks, a young rider rides a bay pony beside a cheerful stream. She is a sun‑kissed, golden‑brown girl with a wide‑eyed, laughing voice, a camera at her hip and a keen eye for the landscape around her. While she sings to the day and breathes the fragrant air, her faithful shepherd dog darts through the grass, ever alert.
The peaceful scene shifts when the dog discovers something hidden in the tall meadow, snapping to attention and yipping a warning. The rider pauses, curiosity mingling with a hint of unease, as the water churns and the pony shifts its weight. This moment promises a small but compelling adventure that will pull her deeper into the valley’s secrets.

A prolific early 20th-century storyteller, this American writer built a strong following with fast-moving Westerns and adventure novels set in rugged landscapes. Before turning fully to fiction, he worked as a reporter and teacher, experiences that helped give his stories a brisk, readable style.
