The narrator looks back on that restless stretch of early youth, when hope moves without pause and every promise feels like an enchanted garden. He is a young officer on a sleek steamship owned by an influential Arab trader, sailing among turquoise reefs and bustling Eastern ports under a striking red flag with a green border. The exotic world of Malay crewmen and foreign customs fuels his sense of possibility, yet an unnamed inner restlessness begins to gnaw at his quiet contentment.
One day, without clear reason, he abandons the ship, walking away as if a bird had left a branch, leaving the captain and his small band of white mates bewildered. The captain, seasoned yet still remembering his own youthful doubts, offers a quiet smile and a final settlement, hinting that the sea will keep its own counsel. What lies ahead is a test of the narrator’s resolve as he steps across that “shadow‑line” between youthful impulsiveness and the responsibilities of adulthood.
