Description

A tormented Italian artist, once celebrated for his vivid imagination, finds his world upended by love and loss. After his wife, confined in a mental asylum, summons him on her deathbed, he is forced to face a past affair with the enigmatic Jeanne Dessalle, whose agnostic views clash with his own lingering faith. The encounter ignites a crisis that drives him away from friends, society, and even his own name.

Retreating into solitude, he places a sealed confession in the hands of the venerable priest Don Giuseppe Flores and disappears, emerging years later under the austere name Benedetto, his body thin from rigorous mortifications yet his spirit aglow with a new purpose. As he moves through monasteries and storm‑tossed landscapes, old acquaintances and curious strangers sense the whisper of the saintly figure they once knew. The novel traces his delicate balance between earthly longing and an ever‑deepening devotion, inviting listeners to contemplate the power of repentance and the search for inner peace.
