Description

A rain‑soaked night in the Virginia mountains forces three weary travelers to press on a treacherous, lamp‑lit road. Their silent leader, a gaunt man with a flickering lantern and a watch he checks obsessively, guides them toward the distant glow of a valley town, promising a mere mile to safety. The men have paid a modest five dollars for his services and, despite fatigue and the threat of hidden shadows, they cling to the hope that the lights ahead signal respite from a bridge washed away by relentless storms.

The journey unfolds against the backdrop of a South still nursing the wounds of a recent war, where pride and poverty linger side by side. The strangers—originating from gentle lowlands—are drawn into a fleeting alliance with their enigmatic guide, trusting him solely on instinct and circumstance. As the mountain road narrows and the night grows colder, their resolve is tested, setting the stage for a tale of survival, uneasy loyalty, and the thin line between desperation and hope.
