Set against the restless wake of Waterloo, a young English gentleman sets out for Paris with a modest fortune and a restless curiosity. Along a crowded post‑road he comes upon a broken carriage whose occupants—an enigmatic veiled lady and a solemn, muffled gentleman—are in sudden need of assistance. Their brief, cryptic exchange hints at secret societies, forbidden medicines, and a shadowed past that reaches back to medieval alchemy.

Drawn into a web of intrigue, our narrator is invited to the mysterious “Room in the Dragon Volant,” a place whispered about in obscure essays on ancient drugs. There, he encounters whispered references to legendary elixirs—Vinum letiferum, Beatifica, and other dark concoctions—that have lingered in hidden corners of history. As the evening deepens, the atmosphere thickens with a sense of forbidden knowledge and the promise of adventures that will test both his wit and his courage.
