Footnotes:
A trio of stirring addresses, delivered to a gathering of eager Irish youths in the early 1890s, opens a window onto a pivotal moment when the sorrow of the Great Famine still shadows the nation’s cultural life. The speaker laments how that catastrophe stifled a flourishing literary scene, yet points to the relentless work of earlier scholars and poets who rescued ancient legends and revived forgotten heroes. He urges the present generation to pick up the unfinished task, warning that without a concerted effort the young mind will be fed by cheap sensationalism rather than the richness of its own heritage.
The following essays expand the call. One maps the roots and surroundings of Irish literature, showing how language, folklore and landscape intertwine to form a distinct voice. Another argues passionately for de‑Anglicising the island, insisting that a true revival must begin with reclaiming the Irish tongue and its traditions. Together they sketch a hopeful blueprint for a literary renaissance that still resonates today.
