Description

At fourteen, Martin Court Bolland sits in a cramped schoolroom while a hulking instructor drones through the opening chapters of Samuel, insisting that each verse be memorised and recited on the spot. The boy’s sharp mind rebels against the literal readings, and he imagines the ancient kings as ordinary people rather than distant deities. His irritation with the teacher’s dogma becomes a quiet, persistent challenge that colors every lesson. As the days pass, Martin finds his curiosity pulling him toward a circle of local youths who call themselves the Revellers, a boisterous band eager for mischief, music, and debate.

Through evenings spent at noisy taverns and secret gatherings in the fields, Martin discovers how stories can be reshaped by friendship, humor, and daring. The Revellers’ spirited discussions push him to question not only scripture but the rules that govern his town, opening a path toward a more personal understanding of belief and belonging. Their adventures hint at larger conflicts that will test loyalties and reshape the quiet life of Elmsdale, while still leaving the outcome uncertain.
