In the rolling, uncultivated hills of early‑twentieth‑century Kentucky lives Sprigg, a wiry twelve‑year‑old with a restless curiosity that outpaces the quiet rhythm of his family’s log cabin. His world is framed by towering woods, a busy front porch cluttered with fishing gear and traps, and a back porch where his mother spins and weaves. Though the region still bears the marks of pioneer hardship, it pulses with the lingering presence of the “red man” and the uncharted mysteries of the forest.
When Sprigg discovers a pair of bright red moccasins, they become more than a curious trinket—they spark a series of small quests that test his daring and reveal the hidden kindness of neighbors, both white and native. Through playful mishaps and quiet moments of reflection, the story captures the thrill of growing up on the frontier while hinting at the gentle lessons that the woods, the people, and those striking shoes will teach him.
