Description

The story opens on a steaming June morning in 1917, as a weary train snakes across the endless Siberian steppe toward Petrograd. Inside the cramped compartment, a motley group of soldiers, exiles and travelers stare out at a landscape of birch forests, red‑flagged stations, and distant factory silhouettes, each carrying their own hopes of a home that has suddenly become both forbidden and beckoning. Through lyrical observations of the endless rail, the narrator reflects on the paradox of leaving America for a Russia caught in the throes of war, revolution, and a restless yearning for something larger than himself.

As the train finally pulls into the quiet platform, the arrival that should signal reunion instead meets an empty station, leaving lovers and aristocrats staring at a city preoccupied with its own turmoil. The first act sets a vivid mood of anticipation, melancholy, and the strange intimacy of strangers bound together by a shared, uncertain destiny, inviting listeners to journey deeper into a world where personal longing collides with history’s relentless march.
