THE RED COURT FARM.
PART THE FIRST.
CHAPTER I. - Introduction.
Perched on a stark plateau overlooking a jagged coastline, the story opens with a description of the half‑moon beach—an oddly shaped strip of sand that can be reached only by a narrow, tide‑bound path or a boat at high water. The cliffs loom, the sea crashes below, and the locals whisper of hauntings that keep even the hardiest fishermen away after dark. This remote, windswept setting creates a tangible sense of isolation, making the red‑brick house that crowns the dell seem both inviting and foreboding.
Into this landscape arrive Robert Hunter and his wife, newcomers drawn to the secluded farm for reasons left tantalizingly vague. Their first days are marked by strange dreams, an accidental injury, and the arrival of a mysterious new mistress who seems to carry her own secrets. As the Hunters settle, the eerie superstitions of the village and the untamed sea begin to stir questions about the farm’s past, promising a tale where personal hopes clash with the land’s lingering mysteries.
