Description

In the mist‑shrouded Cevennes, a restless young man named Edmond awakens with a sudden surge of vigor, compelled to slip from his friends’ camp and navigate the treacherous mountain paths under a fading sky. Guided by instinct, he darts past hidden valleys and a dimly lit house that mirrors his childhood, only to discover a covert plot brewing beneath the vines—a secret meeting of rebels planning a daring assault while trying to avoid the king’s troops.

Edmond’s quiet courage leads him to intercept the conspirators, using a garden arbor as a hidden staging ground and confronting a band of desperate robbers in a brief, brutal clash. After the skirmish, he returns to his family’s abandoned home, where a solemn moment with his ailing father brings a fleeting sense of peace amid the turmoil. The night ends with Edmond and his allies slipping away through shadowed woods, their fate tethered to the uncertain promises of the rebellion.

Ludwig Tieck

A key voice of early German Romanticism, his stories and criticism helped shape the movement’s love of fairy tale, fantasy, and the medieval past. He was also an important translator and champion of Shakespeare, bringing older literature vividly into his own time.
