THE PUSH OF A FINGER
By Alfred Bester
A hidden nerve‑center deep beneath Manhattan, known only to a handful of officials, keeps the world’s “Stability” in check. Inside the nondescript ten‑story Prog Building, reporters and clerks work endless shifts, their daily grind cloaked behind covered windows and whispered protocols. The building’s purpose is to balance opposing forces, a delicate dance that prevents far worse upheavals from tearing reality apart.
The narrator, a veteran beat reporter, arrives early one morning to find a newcomer, Halley Hogan, joining the ever‑shifting chorus of voices that must never agree. Their job is to present every possible viewpoint, ensuring the public never sees a single, unchallenged truth. As they exchange banter about the secretive mechanisms that shape civilization, the stakes of the unseen power structure begin to surface, hinting at a larger conflict that could pit one man against an entire world.

A restless, inventive voice in science fiction, he helped push the genre toward sharper psychology, faster pacing, and a more modern feel. Best known for The Demolished Man and The Stars My Destination, he left a small body of work with an outsized reputation.
