The Practical Joke; Or, The Christmas Story of Uncle Ned

Christmas brings a houseful of children, games, presents, warm fires, and the eager anticipation of stories from Uncle Ned. As the family gathers around the hearth, the kindly old storyteller agrees to recall a youthful adventure from the days when he was a lively, mischievous boy. His tale begins with the excitement of a moonlit Christmas-night skating expedition, as he and his companions set off for a beautiful country pond.

What starts as innocent holiday fun soon carries a serious warning about thoughtless mischief and the dangers that can hide beneath a seemingly perfect scene. Alongside the adventure, the story gently reminds young listeners to be grateful for their comforts and to remember children whose families cannot provide the same joyful celebrations. With its cozy family setting, old-fashioned humor, and clear moral spirit, this seasonal tale offers a charming listen for children and anyone who enjoys a fireside story with a lesson at its heart.
