Description

The story opens with a quiet sunrise over the Pacific, a lone boat drifting in golden seas as a young sailor awakens from a harrowing sleep. In the first light he is thrust into a flood of memories—childhood, the bustling wharves of San Francisco, and the promise of a profitable voyage to the Low Archipelago. The vivid seascape sets the tone for a tale that balances the awe of the ocean with the fragile humanity of those who sail it.

Aboard the schooner Cormorant, the crew’s dynamics quickly surface. Captain Coxon’s temper and the second mate Harrod’s secret reliance on a mysterious Chinese intoxicant create tension that erupts into disaster when a fire ignites in the ship’s varnish room. As flames threaten to consume the vessel, Floyd—a hopeful, optimistic young man from Devon—must confront the chaos and the hidden dangers among his comrades, setting the stage for a perilous journey across unforgiving waters.
