CHAPTER VII. THE ONLY WAY TO SETTLE IT.
In the ragged glow of post‑war America, a ragtag flying circus circles the dusty airfields of California, its pilots chasing thrills and a paycheck in equal measure. At the heart of the troupe is Russ Healy, a wiry, soft‑spoken stunt flyer who treats his battered biplane like a trusted companion. The aircraft—scratched, oil‑stained, and powered by an ancient Hall‑Scott engine—has carried him through everything from daring stunts to low‑level spray runs, and his devotion to it feels as sturdy as its riveted frame.
When the boss, Bob Brooks, decides the circus must shed two planes, the showdown comes down to a single, stubborn choice. Russ is offered a sleek, modern Waco that promises speed and safety, yet he insists on keeping the “Old Lady” despite its creaks and rattles. The tension between nostalgia and progress sets the stage for a high‑flying battle of wills, where loyalty to a piece of flying history may cost more than a few dollars.
