Description

The Hill Division stretches across a rugged spine of mountains, a steel vein that claws its way through canyons, tunnels and dizzying grades, all while the wind whistles through the lofty peaks. In this unforgiving world, the men who keep the trains moving are rough‑handed and hard‑hearted, yet their loyalty runs deep, forged by shared hardship and the relentless roar of diesel and steam. The forewords paint a vivid picture of a line where danger and beauty coexist, setting the stage for stories of bravery, camaraderie and the raw pulse of early twentieth‑century railroading.

At the heart of the first tale is Toddles, a night operator whose very presence is the subject of whispered speculation. Though he isn’t a conventional railroad man—he isn’t even truly a man—Toddles haunts the dark cars, moving through the aisles with an uncanny silence that unsettles his colleagues. As the night deepens, his mysterious role begins to surface, hinting at a deeper connection to the iron tracks and the hidden rhythms of the night shift.
