A bustling day at the city’s grand museum turns into a hush of shock when a frantic attendant seals the doors and calls for everyone to stay put. In the left‑hand gallery the crowd discovers a chilling tableau: a young woman lies still on the marble floor, an arrow lodged in her chest, while a composed older lady kneels over her, her hand resting on the weapon as if frozen in disbelief. The museum’s director and its seasoned curator are drawn into the mystery, each trying to piece together who the victims are and what could have caused such a sudden, brutal act in a place of art and learning.
As the initial panic settles, the pair begin to question the surrounding clues—a missing child, strange footprints, and a whispered warning from a lone voice urging someone to speak. Their investigation forces them to confront hidden motives among the staff and visitors, and to wonder whether the tragedy is an isolated crime or part of a larger, more sinister plot. The tension mounts as the museum’s polished corridors become a maze of secrets, leaving listeners eager to follow the unraveling of this early‑stage enigma.

A pioneer of American detective fiction, she helped shape the mystery novel with intricate plots and a sharp sense of legal detail. Her stories arrived decades before the golden age of crime fiction and still feel like the groundwork for it.
