Description

Winter drapes Heron Dyke in a relentless gray, the wind from the north rattling the shutters as the sea hammers the shore with a frozen fury. Lifeboat crews stand ready, and the Easterby lighthouse flashes its steady beam like an eye of faith across the storm‑tossed waters. Inside the Hall, life seems unchanged, its four walls holding a quiet monotony that masks subtle shifts.

When two young women from London replace the dismissed maids, they bring fresh curiosity and a disdain for the superstitions that linger in the countryside. Yet whispered tales of the north wing's ghost—a vanished maid whose pale face is said to stare from the gallery—still drift through the corridors, accompanied by unexplained knocks and mournful sighs at midnight. Their first outing to the nearby town leaves Phemie with unsettling gossip that promises to stir the uneasy calm of the Dyke.
