Description

Set against the crumbling walls of Melrose Abbey and the wild, moon‑lit banks of the River Tweed, the novel opens in a landscape where history and legend intertwine. The author paints the deserted village, the haunted churchyard and the fairy‑filled glens with such detail that the reader can almost hear the rustle of ash trees and the distant echo of ancient chants. This richly imagined border country, with its superstitions and lingering spectres, forms a vivid backdrop for a tale of faith and rivalry.

Into this setting two determined souls emerge, each carrying a fierce conviction about the future of the Church. One, a loyal monk bound to the waning Catholic establishment, strives to protect the ancient rites that have shaped his world; the other, a fervent reformer, believes the new doctrines will cleanse and renew a faith in peril. Their parallel journeys, driven by sincere intention yet divided by doctrine, promise a compelling clash of ideals as the borders of belief are tested.
