Description

The opening scene drops you into the ancient heart of the Colosseum, where a 19th‑century visionary has turned the arena into a giant studio for a sweeping panoramic painting. Detailed diagrams guide the ear through columns, spiral staircases, and suspended galleries that support the massive canvas. Listeners learn how timber towers, iron braces and rope‑hung platforms create a three‑dimensional scaffold reaching up to seventy‑three feet. The narrator also hints at the visual effect of the panorama, framed by arches and illuminated by skylights.

The project’s chief artist, Mr. Parris, faced a dizzying mix of technical and artistic hurdles, from coordinating dozens of assistants to coping with pigments that change hue with the viewer’s angle. Ingenious devices—bridges, triangular platforms, and a temporary crane—allowed painters to reach the highest reaches of the canvas. Even the dangers are palpable, as Parris survived two serious falls while working aloft. The description evokes both the awe of the finished picture and the remarkable ingenuity required to bring it to life.
