Description

Tom Ticehurst, a practical seaman with a lineage that stretches back to a pirate great‑grandfather and a Royal Navy grandfather, finds himself appointed chief mate on the 1,100‑ton bark Vancouver. His older brother Will, a second mate with a fondness for drink, has always been the family’s wild card, a fact that worries their mother enough to push Tom onto the ship. The pair set sail from Liverpool for Melbourne, hauling a mixed cargo and a steady stream of emigrants, while Tom tries to keep his head down and his shipmates in line.

The voyage runs smooth until they drop anchor at Sandridge, where a striking woman steps aboard in a small boat—Will’s wife, whose fiery complexion and sharp gaze seem to read Tom like an open ledger. Her sudden appearance throws the brothers into an uneasy rivalry, hinting at secrets, jealousy, and the fragile balance of duty versus desire. As Tom grapples with his brother’s habits and his own growing curiosity, the first true storm on the Vancouver begins to brew, promising a year that will test his resolve and reshape his understanding of family and honour.
