Description

A breezy April morning in 1861 finds a young Virginian, Baillie Pegram, riding his headstrong sorrel mare through pine‑lined fields, where the winding roads and crooked bridges are as familiar as the rhythm of daily life. When the pair stumble upon a broken bridge, they discover a distressed horse and its genteel rider caught in a precarious trap. Baillie's quick‑thinking rescue, marked by polite courtesy and a touch of Southern gallantry, reveals both his practical skill and the quiet dignity of the young lady, whose poised defiance hints at a spirit unwilling to be merely a damsel in distress.

Set against the backdrop of a tranquil yet subtly restless Virginia, the scene introduces a world poised on the brink of upheaval. The characters’ interactions—between the determined master, his spirited mare, and the resolute gentlewoman—suggest deeper currents of loyalty, honor, and the looming conflict that will test their convictions. Listeners are invited to follow Baillie's journey as his life intertwines with the unfolding drama of a nation about to change forever.
