Description

The story opens with a daring aerial dogfight over the front, where the narrator and his comrade Dick Gunter clash with enemy aircraft. A sudden hit forces their plane down, leaving the protagonist bruised but alive and soon on a brief leave back in England. During his recovery he discovers that his memory has been shattered, leaving key moments of his life in darkness.

Before the war he was raised by the kindly Mrs. Caldicott alongside her daughters, especially Nessa, with whom he shared a childhood and a broken engagement. Nessa urges him to abandon his idle comforts and forge a career, but pride keeps him from heeding her advice. Their strained relationship lingers as Europe inches toward conflict.

Back in civilian life, the protagonist finds himself drawn into a web of rumors, spies, and political unrest, hinted at by a looming bread riot and a mysterious figure named von Gratzen. As he pieces together his lost past, he must decide whether to act or remain a spectator.
