In the countryside near Palaiseau, gentle Annette serves a prosperous farmer, whose kindness offers her a secure home despite the sharp temper of his wife, Julianne. One summer evening, Annette accepts the heartfelt proposal of Blaisot, a young man who loves her, but their happiness is interrupted by the sudden return of her employer. Nearby, a talkative magpie watches the household from its wicker cage.
When Annette rushes to greet her impoverished, long-absent father, the bird seizes a silver spoon and flies toward the abbey. The theft leaves Annette vulnerable to suspicion, while her father’s own troubles bring fearful accusations and the threat of disgrace. As she struggles to protect him, she must navigate the demands of a harsh household, the interference of an unscrupulous justice, and a desperate request that may cost her dearly. Told in lively rhymed verse, this melodramatic tale blends romance, rural hardship, mistaken appearances, and the peculiar consequences of one mischievous bird.
