Description

In a modest flat on Marylebone Road, Robert and Ellen Bunting try to preserve the outward signs of respectability they earned through years of service. Their carefully chosen furniture and faded photographs mask a growing desperation: the fire is low, the pantry is empty, and even tobacco has become a luxury. Yet their pride keeps them from asking for help, and each day they edge closer to the brink of poverty that threatens to shatter the fragile stability they have built.

When a quiet stranger appears seeking a room, the Buntings are torn between the hope of a modest income and the unease of inviting an unknown presence into their tightly controlled world. As the new guest settles in, the couple’s already strained routine is disrupted, and subtle signs hint that the lodger may hold secrets of his own. The tension between hospitality and suspicion sets the stage for a suspenseful examination of trust, survival, and the hidden lives that lurk behind respectable doors.
