Description

Peter Margerison arrives at an elite boarding school, carrying the weight of a family inheritance that marks him as both an outsider and a potential heir. On his first days he encounters Urquhart, the charismatic captain whose effortless authority both intimidates and fascinates him, and a small, seemingly trivial task quickly becomes a badge of uneasy acceptance. Peter’s polite deference masks a restless curiosity as he navigates the school’s hierarchies, battling a string of minor mishaps that feel oddly prophetic of the larger divides he will later confront.

Through sharply observed scenes of classroom rituals, spirited matches on the football field, and quiet moments in the dormitory, the novel sketches a world where wealth and privilege sit just beyond reach. Yet Peter’s misfortunes are countered by a keen sense of humor and an unspoken yearning for belonging, hinting at the personal and societal reckonings that lie ahead. The opening establishes a vivid portrait of a young man caught between inherited expectation and the harsh realities of a class‑stratified society.
