Description

In the bleak quarter between London's City and West End, young Valeria Brinton finds herself thrust into married life under a gray sky and a hurried ceremony. Orphaned and with few friends, she leans on her uncle and the loyal family clerk, Benjamin, as she takes the hand of the nervous Eustace Woodville, a man whose own family opposes the union. Their wedding is a modest affair, marked more by the absence of relatives than by celebration.

Even the simple act of signing the marriage register becomes a portentous moment when Valeria, distracted, writes her married name instead of her maiden, prompting a superstitious warning from her aunt. The couple’s shaky signatures hint at the uncertainties ahead, as both grapple with doubts, societal expectations, and the weight of family disapproval. As they step out of the vestry, the pair must navigate a world where love, duty, and reputation are tangled in the strict moral code of Victorian England.
