BEING A ROMANCE OF THE DAYS OF
INTRODUCTION.
I.—THE KING'S RING.
The story opens in the chaotic midst of the Thirty Years’ War, when the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus leads his forces across a scarred Europe. At its centre is a young surgeon from East Bothnia, born on the same day as the future emperor Napoleon, whose childhood ambition to trade the plough for the sword is curbed by his mother’s promise. After a chance announcement from the medical faculty, he defies that vow, volunteers as a field surgeon, and finds himself stitching wounds amid the smoke of battles such as Breitenfeld. His quick skill and gentle humor become his armor as the war’s harshness presses in.
While moving between camps, he encounters Lady Regina, a noblewoman bound by an oath that drives her into the heart of the conflict. Their meetings ripple through sieges and skirmishes, revealing how love can bloom even under cannon fire. Together they grapple with the clash of duty, honor, and the quiet yearning for peace, offering a portrait of humanity that survives the clatter of swords and the toil of the plough.
