Description

In the bustling streets of early‑19th‑century Annapolis, intrigue swirls around the governor’s elegant garden parties and the shadowy docks where ships meet stormy seas. Martha Stirling, the governor’s quick‑witted niece, delights in playful flirtations while keeping a keen eye on the strangers who drift into the capital. When the handsome Sir Edward Parkington arrives, clutching mysterious letters and a tale of survival from a wrecked bark, his polished charm quickly becomes the talk of the town.

Martha’s curiosity is piqued as she watches Sir Edward navigate the social whirl of colonial aristocracy, his enigmatic past hinted at by the governor’s knowing smile. Meanwhile, the genteel residents of Annapolis—racing enthusiasts, ambitious families, and secretive officials—begin to whisper about hidden motives and concealed identities. The novel unfurls a vivid portrait of a city where loyalty, reputation, and love are constantly tested against the tide of deception.
