The Impossible Voyage Home - By F. L. WALLACE - Illustrated by DICK FRANCIS
II
In a near‑future where interplanetary travel is routine, humanity is hemmed in by a stubborn biological barrier. Even with a modest gain—twenty‑five months and six days of usable life in space—radiation still gnaws at bodies, eroding health and even fertility. Engineers debate whether to bulk up shielding or simply shave the travel time, while the training director urges a new generation of fearless, ultra‑young crew members. The race to outpace the Sun’s relentless push between Earth, Mars and Venus sets the stakes.
Ethan, a seasoned commander, and Amantha, a Mars‑based scientist, wrestle with those dilemmas in a cramped briefing room. Their exchange jumps from anti‑radiation garments to the haunting image of a baby—real or synthetic—highlighting how humanity still craves the tactile comfort of home even as it pushes farther from it. As the planetary gap widens, they consider daring concepts: tougher genetics, faster propulsion, and the ever‑present “heredity block” that limits how far a human body can venture. Their uneasy optimism hints at a precarious balance between survival and the yearning to return.
