Description

Baltazar is a man of contradictions—brilliant yet reckless, driven by sudden bursts of inspiration and equally sudden bouts of despair. His life before the war unfolds in fragmented episodes that reveal a restless intellect and a penchant for daring, often self‑destructive, pursuits. Readers are invited to piece together his story through the eyes of those who witnessed his singular charisma.

When the Great War shatters the world, Baltazar finds himself a wounded officer at the stately Churton Towers, now repurposed as a convalescent home. There he meets Marcelle Baring, a seasoned nurse whose practical compassion cuts through the grand yet hollow surroundings, and whose curiosity draws her to the young lieutenant with a freshly healed foot amputation. The hallways echo with the quiet restlessness of recovering soldiers, and Baltazar's sharp wit masks a deeper struggle to reconcile his past with the new reality of loss. Their early exchanges hint at a complex bond that may steer both their fates amid the lingering echo of battle.
