Description

In the pale light of a March dawn, two exhausted soldiers lie hidden beneath an apple tree on the outskirts of the deserted village of Beaucourt. The world feels still, broken only by a distant gunshot that shatters a lone tree and reveals the lifeless body of a comrade, his red identity disc swinging from a frayed string. As the surviving man, Private Paul Brent, sips stale water and bites a crumb of biscuit, the quiet landscape becomes a backdrop for his numbing grief and lingering bewilderment.

The crimson disc, a simple badge of a fallen soldier, draws Brent’s gaze and seems to pulse with memories of battles, jokes, and the camaraderie he once shared. Its glow hints at a personal history that refuses to stay buried, pushing him to confront the absurdity of war and the fragments of his own broken self. The novel follows Brent as he rises from that silent orchard, carrying the weight of loss while searching for purpose amid the chaos that surrounds him.
