The horse has been humanity’s steadfast partner for millennia, shaping the rise of empires, the sweep of battlefields, and the rhythm of daily life. This study follows that partnership from the first domesticated steeds that pulled Egyptian chariots to the thunder of medieval knights’ hooves. It opens with vivid accounts of early riders and the way early societies began to harness the animal’s speed and strength.
Moving forward, the narrative surveys the horse’s role in classical Greece, the Roman legions, and the great cavalry of Alexander and Hannibal, highlighting both celebrated mounts and the practical innovations such as bits, saddles, and the early horseshoe. The author weaves together archaeological finds, ancient texts, and contemporary letters, always separating fact from the legends that have long surrounded famous steeds. Illustrated with twenty‑five detailed plates, the book brings to life the textures of war, sport, and ceremony that defined each era. Throughout, the focus remains on how these animals influenced the course of human development rather than on mythic fantasy.
The closing chapters note the horse’s decline with motor cars. They honor its legacy.
