Description

At Hillard House, eighteen‑year‑old Barrie lives under the stern watch of her grim grandmother and the house’s rigid rules, where romance is dismissed as frivolous nonsense. Yet behind the solid façade of her world lies a cracked, ajar door to the garret stairs—a portal that promises a glimpse of Fairyland and the “fairy gold” she has only ever imagined through a keyhole. The contrast between her dutiful outer life and the pulsing curiosity of her inner self drives her toward a secret that has been barred for years.

When the housekeeper, Mrs. Muir, leaves the door unlocked by mistake, Barrie seizes the chance to step into the forbidden space. The garret swarms with a shimmering haze that feels like water lit from within, inviting her to taste the romance she has been starved of. Her heart races as she pushes the ancient key, aware that each creak could usher her into a world where ordinary rules no longer apply.

The novel follows Barrie’s first daring foray into this hidden realm, blending gentle humor with a wistful yearning for something beyond her prescribed life. As she navigates the delicate balance between duty and desire, the story captures the intoxicating thrill of youthful curiosity and the promise of enchantment just beyond a closed door.
