CHAPTER II. - "FAREWELL, A LONG FAREWELL."
In a remote Derbyshire manor, a bitter December night finds Miss Pengarvon alone in the green‑walled parlor, candlelight flickering over a delicate embroidery she is determined to finish before bedtime. The quiet house, wrapped in snow and lit only by the steady tick of an old case‑clock, holds a secret: the sisters’ needlework is not just a pastime but a covert source of income, known only to the house’s sole male servant. Their meticulous handiwork, sold in a distant town, hints at a hidden network that sustains the modest lives of the two women.
As the clock strikes half past ten, the sisters’ stark personalities emerge—Miss Pengarvon, grim and austere, with steely blue‑grey eyes, and her softer‑spoken younger sister, Letitia, almost her mirror image. Their quiet existence is poised on the edge of change, and the reader is drawn into the subtle tensions and mysteries that lie beneath the embroidered threads.

A prolific Victorian novelist with a gift for mystery, sensation, and suspense, he wrote dozens of popular stories that kept readers guessing. Alongside his fiction, he also drew on years of railway work, giving some of his writing a practical, observant edge.
