The Haunted Sentry Box of Porto Rico
THE
Beneath San Cristóbal’s old fort, a lonely sentry box projects over the sea—and carries a terrifying history. Years earlier, a soldier vanished from the post, leaving only his weapons behind. That same night, a beloved priest disappeared as well, with his small gold cross found at the sentry box door. Local people blamed sea-devils and avoided the place, but the truth is said to be stranger than superstition.
The story unfolds through an old shopkeeper’s dramatic account, told one Saturday evening to a gathering of listeners in Mayagüez. At its center is Pedro Delvarez, a troubled young soldier whose reckless past, ruined marriage, and bitter rivalry with the brutal Torcas have brought him to the edge of despair. When his wife is found dead and Pedro is accused of murder, he stands duty at the haunted post with suspicion closing around him—and with a mysterious stranger listening intently from the shadows. This atmospheric tale blends romance, betrayal, military life, and supernatural menace in colonial Puerto Rico.
