A restless tide has always pulled at Nicholas Chase, whose family has navigated the oceans for generations. After a decade of half‑hearted commerce, he finally abandons the shore‑bound grind, driven by a childhood vision of white‑sailed harbors and distant poles. With a modest sum in hand, he seeks a venture that will let him answer the sea’s call and prove his own worth.
He soon finds a patron in Chauncey Gale, a flamboyant millionaire eager to fund daring exploits, and together they assemble a colorful crew—including Gale’s sharp‑witted daughter Edith and the pragmatic maid Zar. Their steam yacht, Billowcrest, is refitted and set for the unknown, promising both scientific discovery and the stir of romantic entanglements. As they push farther into icy waters, the expedition confronts strange landscapes, enigmatic locals, and the first hints of the challenges that lie ahead, all while the promise of the South Pole glimmers on the horizon.
