Description

A group of energetic schoolboys spend a crisp winter day gliding across a frozen lake, where the fast‑talking Dick and his friends keep a watchful eye on Hen Dutcher, the self‑confident but often misunderstood member of the crew. Their banter runs the gamut from good‑natured ribbing to outright jeering, and Hen’s pride is tested as he tries to prove himself on the ice while the others tease him about his “anvil‑like” ways.

When a sudden blizzard rolls in, the boys find themselves snowbound in a remote cabin, forced to set aside rivalry and cooperate to stay warm and safe. The storm turns their playful rivalry into a hunt for clues about a mysterious presence that seems to stalk the night, prompting a clever mix of teamwork, daring shortcuts, and the kind of youthful ingenuity that keeps listeners turning the page.

Through the cold and the camaraderie, the story captures the exuberance of winter sports and the growing bonds among friends who learn that true courage often starts with a simple act of kindness.

H. Irving (Harrie Irving) Hancock

1868–1922

Best known for brisk, patriotic adventure stories for young readers, this prolific American writer moved easily between journalism, technical writing, and fiction. His books often mixed action, discipline, and military themes in a style that helped define popular boys' series fiction of the early 1900s.
