Description

Three fresh‑man friends sit restless in a polished bank office, their boots tapping the floor as they await the arrival of the man who will launch them into the wilds. Dick, the impatient leader, has already secured a summer prospecting contract from his uncle‑by‑marriage, promising a trek through the Hophra Mountains in search of rare metals like tungsten and molybdenum. Beside him, big‑shouldered Larry leans on a window overlooking jagged peaks, while slight, notebook‑clutching Charles “Purdy” Purdick studies mineral specimens with quiet curiosity.

Together they represent ambition, steady resolve, and the hope of an underdog yearning for a real vacation beyond their industrial town. Uncle Billy’s generous stipend guarantees each of them a paycheck regardless of what they find, turning the expedition into both a practical job and a rite of passage. As they prepare their kits and exchange banter, the promise of rugged terrain, hidden ore, and the camaraderie of a youthful trio sets the stage for an adventure that will test their patience and friendship.

Francis Lynde

1856–1930

Best known for brisk adventure stories set across the American West, this prolific early 20th-century novelist filled his fiction with railroads, mining camps, and high-stakes schemes. Several of his books later made the jump to silent film, showing how naturally his stories lent themselves to action and suspense.
