In a windswept marshland on England’s bleak east coast, three sisters live under the stern watch of their aunt, a woman determined to keep them unmarried until they reach twenty‑five. Their world is a tidy “Mud Flats” village of red‑brick houses, boatyards and a relentless routine of porridge, tea and endless sameness, where the only male presence is a frail gardener whose eccentric wig draws more smiles than respect.

Bound by boredom and the heavy expectations of their family’s will, the girls—precocious, pretty, and restless—spend their days dreaming of faces different from their own, of colors beyond the pale, and of a life beyond the village green.
