Description

Set against the rolling hills, marshes and patchwork farms of Sussex, the story opens with a detailed map of four country roads that frame a quiet, almost timeless parish. Reverend Mr. Sumption, a large‑bodied Baptist minister with a shabby hat and a habit of speaking to himself, walks these lanes, pausing to rescue a beetle and pocket a stray turnip, gestures that make the local folk label him “queer.” The narrator paints the landscape in luminous detail—the golden hilltops, the smoky inn at Woods Corner, the scent of stagnant water—drawing listeners into a world where the land and its people are inseparably linked.

As Sumption turns toward the East Road, the narrative follows his internal rhythm, a blend of modest piety and a subtle yearning for comfort beyond his modest cottage. Through his eyes we glimpse the daily rituals, the gossip of cottage doors, and the quiet tension between duty and desire. The opening promises a gently observed portrait of a solitary clergyman navigating the humble dramas of rural life, inviting listeners to linger in the breath of the countryside and the soft, thoughtful humor that underlies it.
