The Fisher-Boy Urashima

Urashima is a kind young fisherman who believes every living creature deserves compassion. When he frees a tortoise instead of taking it home for dinner, he discovers that the creature is connected to the Sea-God’s daughter, a beautiful princess from a wondrous kingdom beneath the waves. Grateful for his mercy, she invites him to the Dragon Palace, where coral walls, jewel-bright trees, silver fish, and golden dragons create a world beyond imagination.

After three happy years in this magical realm, Urashima begins to long for his family and asks to return home for a brief visit. The princess reluctantly agrees, giving him a mysterious box and warning him never to open it. Back on shore, however, he finds that his familiar village has vanished and that far more time has passed than he expected. This enchanting Japanese folktale blends kindness, wonder, longing, and the peril of ignoring a promise.
