Description

A seasoned monk‑scholar narrates his own life as a tapestry of Norman chivalry and island intrigue, set on the cliffs of Guernsey in the year 1157. He recalls the austere halls of Vale Abbey, where early lessons in Latin, swordplay and piety shaped a boy who must choose between the cloister and the battlefield. The opening images of wind‑swept sea, ancient castles and the looming presence of the Grand Sarrasin lend the story a vivid, almost pictorial quality.

From this foundation the chronicle follows Sir Nigel’s first steps into adulthood—his training under Brother Bernard, his first encounters with marauding pirates, and the uneasy alliance between monks and local lords. As the young knight gathers tales for his grandchildren, he also wrestles with the expectations of his noble lineage and the harsh realities of life on the Norman coast. The narrative balances quiet reflection with the promise of looming conflict, inviting listeners to step into a world where history and imagination intertwine.
