V THE HEIRESS OF GREAT BRITAIN (HERRENHAUSEN, 1701-1714)
The book traces the life of Electress Sophia, a German princess whose sharp mind and steady character placed her at the center of early modern European politics. Born into the Stuart line and raised amid religious strife, she saw the Palatine House wane and the Hanoverian dynasty emerge. Her education and vigor made her a leading female voice of the age’s liberal thought, and her marriage linked her fate to the House of Brunswick‑Lüneburg. Early chapters outline her family’s ambitions and the wider clash between France, Rome and England.
The narrative then turns to Sophia’s pivotal role in the British succession dispute, a question that reshaped the continent’s power balance. It follows her careful negotiation of titles, alliances and religious concerns to secure a place for her descendants on the English throne. By examining Hanoverian policies before their accession, the author shows how her political skill helped forge the dynasty that would rule Britain for generations.
