The Duquesne Christmas mystery
THE DUQUESNE
Set against a steep hillside above a river and blazing steel mills, this dramatic Christmas pageant brings the ancient Nativity story into a distinctly modern industrial community. Prophets proclaim the long-awaited promises, while three Eastern Kings follow a mysterious star toward the newborn Child, carrying gifts and faith in the prophecies that guide them.
Their journey brings them before Herod, a troubled ruler who sees the promised King not as a holy wonder but as a threat to his power. As the star disappears and danger gathers, the travelers must judge whom they can trust and how far they dare proceed. Written for performance by the people of a Pennsylvania mill town, the play combines biblical grandeur, poetic dialogue, and vivid staging with an atmosphere shaped by smoke, machinery, and winter darkness. It offers listeners a solemn yet accessible retelling of the Christmas story, focused on prophecy, courage, and the struggle between worldly authority and spiritual hope.
