Description

Set against the clatter of a Nevada short‑line railroad in the early 1900s, the story follows Larry Donovan, a fresh‑out high school graduate who spends his evenings mopping oil‑slicked gears in a massive mountain locomotive shop. He shares cramped meals and jokes with fireman Grigg Dunham, yet his mind is restless, haunted by the same question that haunts every apprentice: will the rails ever lead him elsewhere? As the whistle blows and Larry walks home with his father, a crossing watchman, their quiet conversation reveals his yearning to break free from the predictable path of a shophand.

Listeners are drawn into the rhythm of steam and steel, feeling the heat of the round‑house and the weight of expectations on Larry’s shoulders. The narrative balances gritty detail with the tenderness of a father‑son bond, hinting at an unexpected chance that could shift his destiny beyond the tracks he knows. With humor and vivid description, the first act sets the stage for a journey as much about personal ambition as the world of railroads.
